At the Market

Teaching vocabulary sometimes takes extra practice, that is why I set a special homework to my students.

While we were learning vocabulary at the market, I thought why not organize a market right in the classroom. I told students to cut the food vocabulary we learned from the advertisements they usually get to their homes from the local supermarkets. Also, if they wanted to learn new vocabulary, they could bring photos of food they would like to know in English. The guidelines were to cut the photo of a certain product (fruit, vegetables and meat), stick it on a paper or a cardboard and write the name of the product underneath.

When I came to class more than 90% percent of the students had their homework (we all know that sometimes some of them forget) and all of them had extra words. I was thrilled!

So were they. 😁

The first activity was to set up a stand in pairs and pretend to be a seller on the market. My students really got into the character and even started to make fake money, write price tags, wondered what currency to use (which led to learning about dollars, pounds, euros etc.)

The second activity was to roleplay a situation where one person is the seller and the other is the customer. They practiced polite expressions in shopping. They had to buy the groceries that they will use in the next activity to create a daily menu.

The third activity was to create a daily menu of their imaginary restaurant, i.e. five meals and name the groceries that they used.

The final activity was to present their menus and comment on each other’s work.

It was a very lively lesson (as it usually is at the market) and students gave ideas for the next lesson activities.
